Disadvantages Of Recess In Schools

Parents, teachers and educational system have questioned the role of recess in schools and how effective recess is to a child’s education. There are two major concerns addressed by those who opposed to recess. First, they claim that recess detracts a child from instructional time. Moreover, that recess periods randomly scheduled in school day, could potentially disrupt children’s work routine. Finally, they argue that recess promotes aggression and antisocial behaviors (A. D. Pellegrini & Peter K. Smith, 1994). Recess is defined as a temporary withdrawal or cession from the usual routine of academic work that help children decompress (e.g., “Recess” n.d.). Many Psychologist and other researchers have studied the effects of recess such as, the …show more content…
For starters, recess allows children to easily socialize without limitations (Dills, Morgan, & Rotthoff, 2011). During recess, children can build certain relationships with their peers that cannot always be formed a classroom setting due to the limitations. For example, allowing children to choose the level of physical activities and developing their own games permits them to build social relationships during recess (Dills et al., 2011). However, unlike the physical education courses that children are required to take in school, recess allows to them to use the amount of physical activity that they would like to by doing activities they enjoy. Physical education compels more rough activities than playing freely at their own choice and pace (Dills, Morgan, & Rottoff, …show more content…
It is not just a time of the day were children can be free and for teachers to receive a break. It provides them with a time to socially connect with their peers and figure their likes and dislikes. They can create relationships and work on skills that are needed for a lifetime. Recess also allows children to release all the energy that they build up throughout the day to help them become more attentive in the classroom. Inappropriate behaviors are also reduced when children have recess during the school day. My findings conclude with my hypothesis showing that recess does have a significant effect on the way children learn and process information throughout the school day. These theories are not proven to have 100% accuracy but with continuous study and research there can be more insight onto the topic. For instance, further research into this subject can compare the test scores of schools that allow recess daily against the schools that have eliminated recess overall. Also, looking at the disciplinary records of the students comparing the number of suspensions and expulsions based on whether the schools allowed recess or not. Recess in schools is a factor in child development that affects the way a child behaves in and out of school and should remain as part of the school

Recess can be very beneficial when it comes to academic success. Not only is it beneficial, but many middle schoolers say that they want to have recess worked into their schedules. However, school boards across the United States argue that school-contact time should be focused on learning in a classroom, not playing outside. Though school-boards don’t think so, middle school students should have some recess time to give their brain a break.…

It is 10:30 a.m. Elementary school children race out of the doors into the playground, yelling and cheering. At the same time, middle school kids sit at their desks and wonder what happened to recess, which seems like a distant memory to them. Many middle school students agree that recess should become part of their daily academic schedule. First of all, recess will help students stay active and healthy. In addition, recess provides social benefits to students. Finally, the Finnish school system, which has always been ranked highly, incorporates many recesses, which helps students maximize their academic achievement. However, many American schools have removed recess from their students’ schedules. Why should schools keep these many benefits…

In some schools, recess is being done away with, so children as young as kindergarten can have more teaching time. Though the Common Core does not suggest this, for many educators, it was the only option as there was not enough time in the day to accomplish what was needed. This has resulted in behavior issues and obesity.…

Children’s recess time is steadily being cut due to focusing on their academics and passing standardized test. “Of course, No Child Left Behind also has a lot to do with recess cutbacks, as schools spend increasingly frenetic amounts of time preparing children to pass the standardized test which allegedly reveals their academic preparedness” (Osmols, 2011). By cutting children’s recess time you are limiting children from being physically active and further developing their…

    Lack Of School Lunches

Without another lunch line, students will not have enough time to eat. This spawns numerous other issues. First of all, it wastes food. Without time to finish it, many end up disposing of their excess food. It's unreasonable for this to happen, considering many children our age have a lack of food initially. Those who do finish their food may be rushed to eat quickly. As scientifically proven, this causes us to take in too many calories before our brains can send signals of fullness. Lastly, while we do have the opportunity to stay late, many students opt out for recess time. While this is in our control, it's a decision that we make simply because recess is normally our only unorganized physical activity throughout the school day. For kids, it seems impossible to abandon.…

    School Recess

The first reason I will “squeak” upon is that children can, and do learn through the act of playing in an unstructured environment. Accordingly, it seems to me if children are given an opportune moment to make their own decisions without interference from adults, they are granted with a chance to make their own judgment calls in real world situations. According to Audrey Skrupskelis, the president of the American Association of the Child’s Right to Play, children at school recess time are able to learn and practice valuable life lessons, which will serve to benefit them as they continue their journey into adulthood. (Schachter 39) Additionally, I must make it known that during school recess children gain skills they cannot acquire in an academic structured classroom setting. For example, in order to adopt positive peer interaction capabilities a child needs to be afforded an unstructured time to freely associate with other children, and communicate about whatever they want to. Consequently, school recess grants this to a child simply because of the way it is designed. Indeed, a child that is give a chance to talk openly with their peers develops favorable social mannerisms, which ultimately aid in building self esteem. In addition, I must state that without a doubt, school recess is a prime setting for children to establish friendships. To provide support to my claims The American Academy of Pediatrics states that, “recess promotes social and emotional learning and development for children by offering them a time to engage in peer interactions in which they practice and role play essential social skills” (Murry & Ramstetter, AAP 2) Alternatively, a child can acquire and develop physical skills at school recess, too. It is perfectly rational for me to declare that since children are able to get up and move around at recess time that they get…
