According to Michael Richardson, a music therapist, music therapy is “the use of music to achieve other than musical goals” (“Music Therapy” 0:08-0:12). Imagine the agony that terminally-ill patients endure close to their final days. Pain becomes unbearable despite the constant intake of narcotics, since these drugs only suppress pain for a limited period of time. Even though pain can be “well controlled” with medicine, some sufferers personally decide to cease treatment (“What Happens”). Yet, this situation does not pertain to all cancer patients. Several of these ill people are far from their deathbed. A handful of them refuse to even envision what their last days will feel like. Thus, these patients find an alternative methods, which will improve their overall well-being, such as music therapy. The form of music does not necessarily matter, but classical has been shown to aid more. Therefore, classical music has proven to be therapeutic by improving the wellness and mood of cancer patients. …show more content…
A majority of patients take advantage of music therapy since resources are available to them. An example of this is cancer patients using music for its initial intent: entertainment. Patients use music therapy as a substitute in the medical field because it “may be a useful complement to medication and other standard treatments” (MacMillan). Music therapy is helpful to patients going through procedures by making operations more bearable. So, music therapy “has been shown to positively influence several physiological factors” and one of them being anxiety (TA).Patients may be more anxious since that they go into treatment with preconception. This does not mean that their fear of the procedure will diminish. However, pain is not the particular focus because music helps in diminishing negative
