According to Rocco, Bliss, Gallagher and Perez-Prado (2003), the mixed methods types could be classified in terms of the nature of the research project. It could begin with the decision that the study has to exploratory without a priori hypotheses and /or confirmatory with a priori hypotheses. According to these authors, the next stage would be deciding on the type of data collection and operations that would be carried out. This would include the sampling procedures to be used, the measuring techniques as well as the methods that would be used in order to come up with trustworthy results (Rocco et al., 2003, p. 23). Mixed methods therefore requires that the nature of the objectives to be focused on must be decided very early, so that the decision is made as to whether the research study is to be confirmatory or explorative. The significance of these objects can be appreciation for deciding how to proceed with the research …show more content…
It is a decision that has to be undertaken with much consideration as to the suitability of a method. The first step in this decision-making must begin with the subject to be studied, and on the basis of that identify what needs to be learned about the particular subject. Realizing that a multidimensional approach needs to be taken, then the researcher could progress to making the decision to as to which of the existing models could be best applied. The researcher must recognise that there are alternate ways of carrying out research and not just one approach. But it is good to know that there are models which are exploratory, confirmatory and transformative, and which allows for concurrent and sequential processing. With researchers undertaking mixed methods research being familiar with and confident in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, then choosing among different ways of carrying out mixed methods research becomes a creative
