Yet there seems to be a pattern in business employment throughout the years: i.e., there is always someone at the bottom. Job satisfaction is a key ingredient in a business’s success. If a business is to grow, it seems job satisfaction necessarily has to be above average. However, when tracing the cause of job dissatisfaction back to where it started, it seems intuitive to begin with what keeps workers satisfied. Job satisfaction hinges on few but very crucial aspects. According to Robbins and Judge, the six general facets associated with job satisfaction levels are: the work itself, pay, promotion, supervision, coworkers, and the overall job (Robbins & Judge, 2009). The least satisfied facet of those is promotion opportunity (21%). It seems that having the “someone at the bottom” tends to create a larger problem than may be desired by most employers. Just as animals look for an environment with a waterhole and better living space, people at the bottom with little to no hope of promotion are likely to move on and look elsewhere for employment. In trying to keep the good eggs, companies typically reward them in one way or another in order to increase their job satisfaction and, therefore, keep them around longer. For the bad eggs, if they are not productive nor rewarded (whilst others are rewarded), then they are likely to have low job satisfaction levels and, therefore, consider looking elsewhere for employment. In this way, job satisfaction negatively correlates with turnover (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Although Robbins and Judge phrase it softly, Basak (2014) says “Employee’s job satisfaction directly associated with their performance, organizational productivity, and many other issues, including turnover” (p. 500).[1] It naturally makes sense that if someone is unsatisfied with his/her job, he/she will be inclined to leave if convenient enough. Jobs for some people are just a way to get by, pay bills and, if blessed enough, finance a few getaways each year. So if the job doesn’t immediately grab those kinds of peoples’ interest and satisfaction, then the job is expendable given another opportunity is available. Well
