Disadvantages Of Four Day School Week

Imagine having only a four day week, and coming home on Thursday to a nice three day weekend every single week. This does sound good, right? The four day school week is where the school week only consists of Monday-Thursday. However, the only flaw with this is that more time is spent in the classroom, the school year must have a certain number of hours each week. This means having a four day school week, the hours lost on Friday would need to be made up, so more hours would be distributed among Monday-Thursday. This shows that the school system should not allow a four day week because most kids can't focus for the 76 minutes in class, school days would be much longer, and teachers along with students wouldn't have anything to do after the school activities are finished. Hadfield states that "The lost day, spread out over the week results in about 20-30 extra minutes per class period." So, kids are going to have to sit through a 96 minute class period. According to the article The Disadvantages of Longer School Days, Kristine Tucker states that "When kids are too mentally exhausted to concentrate, the last half hour of each class becomes useless." This means that teaching for the whole 96 minutes becomes a waste of time for not only the students but the teachers as well, thus not showing improvement in test scores and grades will tend to decrease at an alarming rate. The test scores the students took will show the school performance level going down. And the teachers will most likely be to blame to this, which might result in the possibility of being fired for not teaching the student what they need to be taught, and not showing
