Disadvantages Of Facebook Essay

I have been using Facebook ever since I was in the eighth grade, but it hasn’t been until this year, when I joined college, that I realized just how beneficial Facebook is to me. Facebook started off as an easy communication device for me when I was in middle school. My friends and I all had simple phones that lacked any ability to send “cool” emoji’s or stickers along with messages. For this reason, Facebook became a huge hit to teenagers like myself a few years back. But as I continue to grow, the benefits of Facebook do as well, allowing me to take advantage of more than just the “cool” emoji’s that come along with the messaging app. Facebook comes with a long list of both pros and cons ranging anywhere from informative group messages to …show more content…

Just because the article is posted on Facebook does not mean that it is true or unhampered with. It is very effortless to scroll through Facebook and read the mass production of relatable articles however, especially with the election just passing, a large amount of said posted articles have been falsely written with no true evidence of data supporting their argument. Facebook holds many benefits, and starting your journey to adulthood often comes with times of reminiscing the past. Facebook offers an infinite of things to distract yourself with and for students like myself who have had the social media site for a long time, often struggle with dismissing past Facebook posts that always seem to pop up when you’re busiest. It is very easy to get caught up in the scopes of seeing what your best friend’s boyfriend’s cousin’s dad is doing when you have a paper to write that’s due in two hours. It is too simple for college students to get caught up in the lives of others instead of doing the inevitable work that will soon grab hold of them.
All in all, social media as a whole comes with both benefits and disadvantages to college students. It is important to use all social media sites, including Facebook, in the correct way in order to get the most out of them. Whether its for communicating with high school friends or for creating a fundraiser invite, Facebook’s characteristics ranging from pro’s to con’s comes with what you make of the site and how you intend to use

Sherry Turkle and Terry Gross’ discussion of the effects of social media and texting on the interpersonal relationships of both teens and older adults was nuanced and touched on multiple interesting ideas; however, Turkle’s concept of the “presentation anxiety” that stems from deciding how to present ourselves social media sites like Facebook struck me as particularly accurate.
