How many times a day does a person check their phone? How many times does a student check a text or play a game while in class? The answer to those questions may vary from person to person and student to student, but the effects of mobile devices in everyday life, especially school, is clear and rapidly evolving. Students nowadays are set up to be distracted from their studies by modern availability of devices and the internet. Disinterest, cheating, deficit of attention, and overall effectiveness and morale of schooling is in full view in every classroom nowadays. Cell phones in school should certainly be prohibited for many crucial reasons. One always hears about stories along the lines of, “Back in my day…”, and how the past was different,

A teacher 's ability to control and keep a rowdy classroom comes with experience and keeping interest in the subject matter, but cell phones make it near impossible. First hand, a modern student knows how difficult it is to simply pay attention to a boring topic with the temptation of social media, games, and messaging in their pocket. In an article by Mediashift it is said that, “At the beginning of every semester, I ask my students how many media they use while doing homework. The great majority of them admit using some combination of two or three of their cell phones, laptops, televisions and iPods while studying. Out of a class of 25, only one or two still value shutting everything off and focusing completely on their work.” This quote is the essence of why cell phones should not be allowed in school. If students are not going to bother focusing at home, what makes someone think they will at school? Students are hurting themselves by using cell phones. A student that would have been hard working and reliable 20 years ago may be extremely lazy and unwilling to put forth quality effort in the classroom today. This solely correlates to two things: A person 's natural work ethic, and outside influences (aka cell phones) Cell phones are a controlled substance, that in moderation, are amazing.
