Disability Interview Reflection

The goal of the interview was to meet with a person who had disabilities that was culturally different than my own. The interview took place on October 8th at 3:00 p.m. at the RAMP office conference room. During the interview we discussed how she adapted to her disability,the functional limitations and rehabilitation services she has received. After the interview I self assessed how we must look at those factors to determine what would be the most appropriate for our client.
In order to better understand my client one must first have some general information on who she is. My interviewee was female around 60 years old. and classifies herself with her primary diagnosis of schizophrenia and secondary diagnosis being a mild intellectual disability.

The dynamics in her family was that her siblings helped take care of her and she grew up in poverty. She talked about the struggles with her father and his denial of her having a disability and eventually lead to him discriminating against her. The rest of her family adapted her disability through her siblings who ranged from 10 years old to 10 years younger than her became caregivers til she was able to care for herself independentlyMy client though was highly independent and eventually decided to live in community integrated living arrangements knowns as CILA homes. Overall, she explains that her family unit was struggled with her disability and that her siblings were very influential in her life. In terms of her education and work experiences, we examined the various places she has worked and places in which she has studied. One of the questions that I asked my client was if there was anytime in her employment history that she had confrontation in which she stated that there had been only been a couple of times that she felt discrimination at work. The time that she felt the most discriminated was when she was put in charge of doing the dishes because they assumed she couldn’t handle to cash register. They never tested her on her skills and abilities and that hurt her the most. Her longest job …show more content…
Due to her age she has had a lot of experience with a variety of services. In order to help manage her schizophrenia, she has been getting counseled by the Ben Gordon Center in Dekalb for the last thirty years. She meets with her therapists once a week for counseling and to ensure she is on the correct medication. She also has utilizes group services that allow her to discuss problems she is facing in terms of her disability with other people. She has had some other health issues that has forced her to seek care by physical therapist and medical doctors. In relation to rehabilitation counseling these could be potential services that we would need to coordinate for our client as well as monitor to ensure her success on the
