An example, is greek philosopher Aristotle who believed that laws should be established and prohibit the birth of children with disabilities, learning this kind of information was new for me. Growing up my teachers always presented Aristotle as a great thinker who invented logic, but after reading this piece of information made me question who he really was. As time went by religion played a huge role on how society sees people with disabilities, with the rise of christianity people were thought that having a disability was not a punishment and instead it showed their followers the meaning of respect, humility and empathy. I chose this three articles because I wanted to increased my knowledge and better understand the disability rights movement during the different eras. Furthermore, it was very interesting learning about historical events that have impacted the way that we interact with each other, the most powerful change was that of the parents movement who came together and demanded public awareness for their children. It 's important to learn that disability discrimination can take many different forms, it can consist of comments, deny access to services and being treated unfairly. The oppression and discrimination that many have faced in the workforce, government services, and in the public education has had a huge effect on how we treat people with disabilities. One thing that I have learned during this course is that words have power and sometimes we say things without thinking of the consequences. In the article People first Language by Kathie Snow states “ the real problem is never a person’s disability,but the attitude of others”is important to know that just because a person has a disability, they are still capable of doing the same things as a human being, many have achieved success and become professionals in sports, business, arts and in other related fields. The stories that I have heard during this course, have left me impressed and have inspired me to continue fighting for my dreams.
