When public officials do wrong (dirty their hands), for example by lying, but do so to further the public good” (Ewoh, page 3). When leaders of administration accept their position they take an oath to uphold the constitution and lying to the people is breaking that oath. America has been put in bad situations because of leaders lying for the “public good”. When America went to war with Iran, the people was told it was for the public good because Iran had weapons of max destruction. Once America’s soldiers enter the land there were no weapons to be found. Another example of a leader lying to the

“Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path” (Reagan 1). Further stating that our country was founded on the principle understanding that the government cannot grasp at control of the economy without also grasping at the control of its’ people; this control would only be gained by force. “And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose” (Reagan 1). Reagan urged the people to understand that by grasping at the comfort the government could “possibly” provide they were simultaneously letting go of their true freedom; a freedom in which the people decided their own fate. In the United States, the American Dream that everyone fervently yearned for and made great sacrifices for was fading away, Reagan insisted the people become aware of the times, and of the power the government was reaching for.…

First, it directs the population to the prospect the leaders want them to see. Through war propaganda, the power can easily alter the population to think of the best for the country. As a result, domestic problems, such as racism, sexism, social class stratification, income inequality, and etc., are overlooked. Compared with the urgency to “reinvigorate the nation’s unity and sense of manhood” (Foner, 681), the responsibility to “teach other peoples the lessons of democracy” (Foner, 739), the importance to fight “a crime against the people of the United States” (Foner, 748), these issues only seem, as they are, domestic. Results of such negligence is the delay of democracy.…

Insert title here “Leadership by deception isn't leadership. It's fraud” a quote by Dashanne Stokes. Even though parties running to be elected often proclaim they can make a difference in a country, when they actually win their promises are often not followed through. This is because, despite humanity's best efforts, when placed in a position of power even those with the purest intentions succumb to unethical practices as seen in Matched by Ally Condie and The Circle by Dave Eggers. Such unethical practices consist of their obsessive need to control others and their reaction when control cannot be obtained, how they will endanger others for their own personal gain, and how they abuse the power given to them.…

What makes a politician a politician? More importantly, what makes a politician successful? Most would say being kind and true in everything they say, I on the other hand, would say that a successful politician has to be an actor and they have to be able to come up with stories in order for them to get close to the people and get them on his side. In the “Empire of Illusion” by Chris Hedges, he argues that the best skill a politician can have is artifice. After reading this passage I have concluded that I can agree with his argument.…

Most people have trouble distinguishing deceit from lying. Both are prevalent today, whether the intent is there or not. Deception is the intent to mislead when the truth is known, whereas lying attempts to avoid the harm of what the truth may inflict upon themselves. Sissela Bok’s “On Truth-Telling” is a prime reading that showcases greed for power that happens in modern-day life. Through this selection, Bok outlines scenarios where deception is practiced for gain or lying is used to spare the pain the truth will cause to themselves.…

It seems that the public is always hearing of powerful people who make hypocritical and scandalous choices: from the local police officer who takes advantage of his position by parking on the wrong side of the street in a non-emergency situation, to former Senate majority leader and President Barack Obama’s former nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Daschle who evaded taxes for a car and driver, to former Illinois Governor Blagojevich who was impeached for trying to auction Obama’s senate seat. These examples lead others and myself in the public to a single yet complex question: Why do people in positions of status, especially representatives of the law, take liberty with the law and their actions as they do? Perhaps their choices…

My position on this issue is the opposite, politicians doesn’t always have to be truthful. As a matter of fact, politicians lie because the people doesn’t want to hear the truth. If two candidates running against each other, the one who tells the public what they want to hear instead of the truth will win the election. The one who tells the truth will loses out. An example could be the 1988 presidential election.…
