Direct Teaching Plan

The different parts of a direct teaching plan are: state the learning objectives and orient students to the lesson; review prerequisites; present new material, conduct learning probes; provide independent practices; assess performance and provide feedback; and provide distributed practice and review. Each aspect can be incorporated into different areas of a lesson plan and some are already present. In the first aspect, learning objectives, each lesson is started out with an introduction that will grab the students interest and let them know what they will be learning during that lesson. When you review what students will be learning, you also review the skills the prerequsites needed for them to complete the assignment or lesson tasks.

During the presentation of learning materials and teaching the lesson, the teacher has the chance to model for what they are learning and there is also the chance to activate prior knowledge. I would first give students a chance to work on research or reviewing the material individually and once they are each ready I would have them get into learning small groups. I would create specific activities so that students would each have something to add to the group. I would begin by assigning roles to students but over time I would give students more freedom over assigning who is doing what and what role each will play. Students will learn well with their peers and they will get a chance to learn more information, share their information with others, develop communication skills, and have a chance to listen to their peers points of views.
