Direct Practice Definition

Direct practice encloses a number of factors also known as micro or clinical practice. Direct practice refers to working with individuals, couples, families and groups. In direct practices, social workers provide professional therapeutic services which include psychotherapy, group therapy education, advocacy, referral, mediation, family therapy, and case management. In direct practice, treatment goals are reached through personal contact and direct influence with clients. Indirect practice is defined as program planning and development, policy analysis, administration, program evaluation and intervention with communities. It is important for the social worker to assist the client in processing any negative emotional reactions that he or she has regarding termination. A plan that the client will follow to maintain the progress that was made in therapy should be developed. A follow up visit may be scheduled to evaluate the extent to which the client has been able to maintain gains from treatment to adjust maintenance strategies based on the clients experience since the last visit, and to communicate the social worker’s continued interest in the welfare of the client.
Task-Centered Treatment Task centered treatment is a short term approach to treatment based on learning cognitive theories. It can use interventions and strategies from many models of cognitive based studies. Stages of task centered treatment include: Engagement, problem centered assessment, the development of problem-solving tasks, review the progress which leads to task completion, evaluation and termination.
