When bosses read resumes, the first thing they see is your name and they try to categorize you in what box you fit into. For example, if you have a last name such as Garcia you are placed into a hispanic box that is often overlooked but if you have a last name such as Johnson they presume you are white and qualified for the job.

A series of reports that have been published in the last few years have shown that young black men are being incarcerated at a rate far greater than their number in the overall population. African-Americans are more likely to be arrested, sentenced and receive harsh penalties than white Americans. Why are African Americans more likely to be arrested you may ask. Well There isn’t an actual answer to why African Americans are more likely to be arrested, but they are judged based off past experiences and skin color. For instance, although African-Americans on average neither consume nor sell more drugs than white Americans, they are much more likely to be arrested and sentenced for drug charges. Racial profiling within the police department factors into police brutality which was often triggered by a specific response of if the victim is not cooperating. When a minority officer racially profiles a minority civilian it becomes a big issue because minority cops should be helping the police build trust among black and Hispanics. In 2012 The New York times published an article about a law lawsuit in Brooklyn Federal Court alleging that minorities in New York Police Department unit were passed over for promotion, Detective Al Hawkins, testified that a superior regularly used the n-word, saying on one

Citizens are supposed to feel safe in regards to law enforcement, but how can they feel safe if those with power abuse it and treat some of them differently than others? Granted, not every individual in law enforcement shows racism towards citizens, but there is a great deal of those who treat people of color differently. The racism in the law enforcement system can be seen in…

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

In order to make the world a better place I would like to see less police brutality through stricter laws in government, a change in the way police are trained, and deeper investigation in issues of police brutality. Police brutality should be lessened because police are meant to be there to protect a community; however, the people being targeted by brutal police tactics, such as racial minorities, feel less safe due to the actions of the police and their abuse of power. This abuse includes taking advantage of someone, manipulation, an unfair gain of benefits for the police, assault, and physical or verbal maltreatment towards people. This should be handled because the only way to restore trust in our enforcement system is if we feel as though…

When thinking about American history, we can all agree that there is a lot of American history that we all want to forget. We wish that we could erase it from our memories and from the textbooks. Sadly, we can’t. It is a part of our American history. For example, when talking about slavery, a police officer would argue that “slavery has nothing to do with where we are today.…

“The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) reports that 6.6 percent of people serve time in prison at some point in their lives, and the statistic rises to a shocking 32 percent for African-American men” (Villines). The African-American community has devastatingly high rates when compared to the general population. This may seem as though it goes against the most basic human right to equality, and in some cases it does, but it can also be explained by the fact that blacks are 7 to 10 times more likely to commit violent crimes than whites (Bandler). “A report of the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (Lotke) indicated that in the District of Columbia, 50 percent of young black men ages 18 to 35 were under criminal justice supervision” (Gostin). These numbers are disproportionate to the crime rates so there is some racial discrimination.…

Police brutality and racism seem to be consistently connected to one another. This has become a serious issue in which circumstances have ended violently or even fatally when involving police officers and African American citizens. In 2014, the United States Census Bureau reported that African American people make up only 13.2% of our population. Anyone can become a victim of police brutality, regardless of their race; but statistics show that African American people are being killed by police at more than twice the rate of Caucasian and Hispanic people. It is also considerably more likely for the African American victims in these situations to have been unarmed at their time of death.…
