Direct vs Indirect Characterization
Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization. Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization (STEAL).
Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts: What is revealed through the character’s private thought s and feelings?

This is the first step in how to know that the statement is either direct or indirect.
Speech: The words that a person speaks says a lot about them. If they take time to say what they are trying to say it can show they don’t really know what they are talking about. If they swear or start cursing, they may be mad or annoyed. If they talk a lot, they may be social or nervous.
