In order to level the playing field for those without the resources to get over these hurdles, I believe we must treat information as a basic human necessity, and that to do this means strengthening public institutions like libraries. Moreover, I believe the dearth of information out there, and the multitudes of mediums, forms and outlets they now come in and from, calls for public competency in critical media literacy; the more organizations working towards providing these competencies, the better we are not just as a nation, but as a society. It is for these reasons a profession in librarianship resonates so strongly with me. As an undergraduate I studied secondary education with the desire to become a social studies teacher. Though this did not come to fruition, I did so because of my desire to see others succeed and to become a part of something bigger than myself.
