World War I is seen as the dawn of modern chemical warfare, with multiple chemical agents being used on a large scale. The variety of poisonous gases resulted in 1,240,000 injuries and 91,000 fatalities. Chemical weapons in World War I were primarily used to subdue, injure, and kill enemy soldiers who were in the trenches, against whom the slow moving gas clouds would be most effective. The types of chemical warfare weapons dominated from debilitating chemicals, such as tear gas and the dreadful mustard gas, to deadly agents like chlorine and phosgene. Though there was a total of 20 different chemical agents.…

Agent Orange in particular made them worried, because it contained a contaminant called dioxin (or TCDD), which is now recognized as a human carcinogen. One study found that some war veterans had “TCDD levels up to 600 ppt in lipid many years after they had left Viet Nam, compared with values of approximately 1–2 ppt of TCDD for the general population” (IARC 343). Those numbers were unsettling for soldiers who served their country during the war. Dioxin contamination could also be passed on to the newborns of infected parents, which was another source of anxiety. The veterans, however, did not stay quiet and keep their worries to themselves.…

The one element of war that blindsided many was the exposure of the most infamous and widely used mixture of several toxic chemicals, including 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T; and 2,3,7,8T (tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin or dioxin) (15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2002). This combination of chemical defoliants is known as Agent Orange, which was used by the United States military to eliminate ground and forest cover for the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. It was also the intent to destroy crops and food sources that were used to nourish the enemy as well. An underlying fault to the unleashed plan to spread agent orange over Vietnam presented itself as the lack of knowledge regarding the potential impacts on those who were exposed to…

I am excited about learning more about how these chemical plants effect our environment. I find it scary when going to a lake, or river because I wonder what is dumped into our water. Some examples of this would be findings that Erin Brockovich has found in her career as an environmental activist. I have followed her for years, and have found she finds evidence of pollution in our waters. Sadly enough, she has found many cases of drinking water not suitable for consumption; such as the drinking water recently in Flint Michigan.…
