Reflective Essay In Divergent

This summer, I was meeting my family in Brazil for the first time. All the expectations and stories were soon to be lived up to or shattered. We were cooking dinner at my aunt’s house. Well, at least she was because she didn’t want me to help. I was the guest. The tiny one person kitchen was filling up as every one of my cousins came over to talk, to help out, and to get to know me. My aunt was stirring the stew in the huge metal pot, which held all the food for the family. Directly behind the stew was the pot filled with rice and another pot had beans. And there was another pot of some kind of meat stew. The stove was as filled as that kitchen at the time. There was about ten of us stuffing ourselves in the kitchen from both entryways—the …show more content…
The main character, Tris, struggles with choosing one faction because she doesn’t belong to just one faction, she belongs to three. Something that is seen as rare and is secretive in the book. I remember reading this part and thinking which faction would I be? Which one would I chose? Would I want to be smart like Erudite, brave like Dauntless, honest like candor? But I don’t want to have to choose, because to me it doesn’t make sense why the characters did have to choose, why they only had to be one thing. Veronica Roth defines being divergent as being different from a group of people. But in this book, being divergent is seen as something awful, which eventually leads to a revolution. As Tris discovers that she is divergent, she is told to not tell anyone. And as the book progresses, the fact that she is divergent practically puts her on a kill list for the authorities. Being divergent, somehow threatens the authority and stability of the factions in the book, but I also believe it can happen in our society as well. Once we are seen as different, as unable to fit into the categories, society frowns upon us and labels us as the black sheep, simply because they can’t identify …show more content…
In America, I am Brazilian. There is no in between. No middle ground. I’m not a cookie cutter fit. People always have to identify each other with their nationally and ethnicity. I have been asked more times that I want to admit, “What are you” in the rudest, ignorant tone, yet at times it was out of pure innocence and lacked any intentional malice. They just needed a category to place me in and they were irritated when they couldn’t identify a category to place me in. I just always tell them I’m Brazilian, because it’s much easier for them to identify me as a Brazilian, who speaks Portuguese and has Brazilian culture, rather than telling them I’m an American, who speaks Portuguese with Brazilian culture and heritage.
The black sheep doesn’t fit into the basic categories, not even into the 21st century societal categories. It’s difficult to be different, to be yourself when every single thing in your life is placing you in a category. And honestly, how do you create something out of nothing? How do you become yourself without the input of the world around you and surge yourself something completely different and new? But somehow, we don’t fit the categories. Then the ones that are “different” unite and form a new category, where the outsiders aren’t so different

Horrible Government The book 1984 by George Orwell and the movie Divergent by are a great example of a dystopian society. A dystopian society is not the kind of place you dream of in a fairy tale. Dystopias are horrible places where there is a leader who tries to control their people with force and mind games. The definition of a dystopian society is an imaginary place where people are unhappy and usually afraid, because they are not treated fairly (Merriam-Webster).…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

While the American system classifies people based on the hypo-descent rule, the Brazilian system classifies them based on what they look like (Spradley and McCurdy 206). Brazil’s direct translation for “race” is “tipos (Spradley and McCurdy 205).” In Brazil, “tipos” stand for a multitude of physical variations that differ from the arbitrary categories created by Americans. Brazilians have a multiplicity of classifications that fall within a wide spectrum of skin colors and phenotypes. This is illustrated, by the following classifications found in Brazil: “1) loura (whiter-than-white, straight blonde hair, blue or green eyes, light skin color, narrow nose, and thin lips, 2) branca (light skin color, eyes of any color, hair of any color or form, except tight curly, a nose that is not broad, and lips that are not thick), 3) morena (has brown or black hair that is wavy or curly but not tight curly), 4) mulata (looks like a morena, except with tight curly hair and a slightly darker range of hair colors and skin colors), 5) preta (looks like a mulata, except with dark brown skin, broad nose, and thick lips), 6) sarara (tight curly blond (or Red) hair, light skin, blue (or green eyes), broad nose, and thick lips), and 7) cabo verbe (straight black hair, dark skin, brown eyes, narrow nose, and thin lips)…

Viewing the past four essays shows the progress and decline of my writing style, and structure. The four essays that were required by the class varied from the best to the worst, both having their similarities and differences. Choosing two out of the four essays, I came to a conclusion that the “process analysis” essay was the best, and the worst essay was the “descriptive” essay. Although it varied from their definitions and structure, the essay’s showed how much the writer, put their work into it. The certain characteristics that made it the worst to the best defined how well the essay would turn out to be.…

How I plan to teach Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students, is to use what I have learned in EDU 305 as a guideline to apply what has been taught in class and use it for my students in the future. Ideally, I would like to teach at high school level in South Korea. I also find that helping CLD students who are learning English as their second language also fits for what I plan for the future. With high schoolers, some of the students that just came to America would not understand English well.
