DMT is said to have one of the shortest “trips” out of all of the psychedelic drugs. “If you smoke it, the trip lasts around 5–20 minutes. If you snort or drink it, the effects can last longer (thesite.org).” The effects of the drug start to take effect in 60 seconds or less. There are 3 main stages to the trip: The Gates, Blast Off, and No Man’s Land (Mur). The first phase is full of bright light and a lot of colors and shapes. The most common way people describe this phase is they see bright light around gates and they feel the need to go through them. Once they go through the gates they move on to phase two, but some people get stuck behind the gates. When they get stuck behind the gates, they have many hallucinations, disorientation, and contact with unknown entities. There are some other reported side effects, such as, being unable to move, the trip being overwhelming, uncomfortable feelings in the user’s stomach, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, panic attacks, increased body temperature, loss of consciousness, vomiting, respiratory irritation, and very intense flashbacks of your life. Those are only the side effects but there are also major dangers to using DMT. The dangers of using DMT include: heart attacks in users with preexisting heart conditions; psychological episodes in users with mental health problems, such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; heart failure, coma, or death in the users taking certain medicines, including antidepressants and painkillers; fatal asphyxiation from vomiting while unconscious; and nerve damage, coma, or death from combining DMT with other drugs (teendrugrehabs.com). The trip will most likely be over in an hour, but there are some lingering effects on the human mind and a feeling of eeriness for a few hours after the user is finished.
