Introduction
Many products including powders, drinks, and foods are marketed as having more protein in them than the average consumption. But is that statement actually true?
Proteins are a type of amino acid. There are twenty known amino acids monomers. Monomers are molecules that can be bonded together to create something else known as a polymer. Every amino acid has to have three things, an amino group, a carboxyl group and a functional group that is special to itself. Something that is crucial to the discovery of protein amounts is peptide bonding. Condensation otherwise known as dehydration created these bonds linking the carboxyl group of a single protein molecule to the amino group of another molecule. Peptide bonds are particularly …show more content…
The way the polypeptides run through the amino acid determines its job in a protein molecule. A protein that has been diluted may not be as effective as one that has not. This lab will show how dilution of protein is effected but also the true amount of protein that is in protein beverages. It is hypothesized that the Special K Protein Drink will have the most protein within its true contents. Testing will be conducted in order to prove or disprove this hypothesis and check the dilution of stock and protein solutions. The Biuret test is used to prove or disprove this.
Many other articles and studies have been done to show that this test is proven to show the amount and sensitivity of protein molecules. This article and study being published by Salle University in the Philippines, tells the reader about the spectrophotometer and how the concentration levels determine its absorption rate and amount.
In this test, protein is revealed to copper ions in an extremely basic solution. This is somewhat similar to the Benedict’s test it does differ, but the reactions that occur are different. During this test copper ions create a lineup with their protein backbone changing the solution to a shade of purple. This color change can be measured by a machine called a spectrophotometer. This device passes light through the test tube containing the device inside, but it calculates how much light is allowed through the …show more content…
It also helped the person doing the experiment find out and explore the twenty amino acids. Proteins are not just in the food we consume but also in our bodies, cells and in the environment. Some further experiments that could be performed like this one is the Benedict’s test, but also tests in other things that we consume on a daily basis. Milk supposedly makes our bones stronger because of protein, well how much protein is in milk. Does the amount of protein change depending on where the milk is from? Does whole milk and skim milk have different amounts of protein in them? This would make another amazing experiment to attempt to figure out how much protein humans actually consume on a regular
