Everything is falling in place as far as grades. I have yet to get accepted into college I believe it's because of my cumulative grade point average. It reflects how poorly I performed at McDonogh 35 before I returned to Sci. I got mail back from Dillard they didn't accept me but they said they would get back with me prior to May 1st. I am sending in other information about my self since I turned my life around. So yes Ms.B i would like for you to advocate for me to the president of Dillard university. David Wallace Foster’s Kenyon College Commencement Speech is extremely successful for a multitude of reasons. It is not so much inspirational or revolutionary or epic, just simply honest. His speech is blunt about what people will face in their life after education. That adult life is boring, repetitive, trivial, tiring. Yet despite being adult life being unsatisfactory, Wallace always says it will only be those things because of your perspective.…

In the writing by Jacob Neusner “The Speech the Graduates Didn’t Hear,” from the Brown’s Daily Herald on June 12, 1983, the author suggests that the graduating class is not being prepared for the real world. The author states that the graduates demand everything even if they didn’t deserve it and never having to do more than what is expected of them. He also credits the lack of performance from the scholars to the faculty because they indulged the behavior by not wanting to be bothered. I would have to agree with the author because we don’t push the students both in the educational standards and in the reality of the real world to their limits. We live in a world where everyone gets a trophy because they participated and not…

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," were the words once spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. His vision was that one day, “little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These notions are being regarded in our everyday lives. He spoke with ethos, pathos and logos- appealing to a variety of cultures.…

In his keynote address to the graduating class of The University of the Arts, Neil Gaiman uses his knowledge that he has accumulated from his successful career in the arts to give advice to the graduating class of 2012. Through his use of metaphorical comparisons, his carefree and honest delivery, and organization of his speech, Gaiman effectively conveys his message to the students that they are going to hit a few bumps in the road, but if they keep up their hard work, their successes will surpass their failures. Gaimans’ main point throughout this speech is that these students can never give up; they just have to keep pushing and pushing to really prosper in their dreams. To begin, Gaiman makes several comparisons between hardships and a career in the arts field. He claims that he would imagine "that where [he] wanted to be--an author, primarily of fiction, making good books, good comics and supporting [himself] through [his] words--was a...distant mountain (3:43)".…

John F. Kennedy was president from 1961 to 1963, in the height of the Cold War. During his presidency, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, which was the closet that the United States and Soviet Union ever came to war. Less than a year after this event, in 1963 President Kennedy gave an impassioned commencement speech at American University. His speech was not filled with inflammatory rhetoric, like calling the Soviet Union an “evil empire” as Ronald Reagan famously would. His speech instead, called for peace, disarmament, and cooperation between the two countries.…

From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…

I had a great discussion with some friends the other day, and I felt like writing about it. It’s no secret that I care a lot about social justice, even if I’m far from an expert. So of course I heard about Patricia Arquette’s Oscar speech (meh) and her elaboration afterwards (ugh). I don’t want this post to be about her comments though, so I’ll just redirect you to Amanda Marcotte’s great overview at Slate instead. The key thing Arquette is:…

Different perspectives may lead to different things but in this case there are two similarities and a difference in Martin Luther King’s Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance speech and in President Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize speech. Both King and Obama express and explain their views on how things should be and how they should be done. In both speeches, Martin Luther King and President Barack Obama talk about violence but in different ways. King’s examples are about how violence is used for killing people because of something as crazy as segregation while Obama’s examples are about how violence is used for the safety and self-defense of others in need.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
