Digital technology within the elementary school classroom is something that as of lately has started to become to be an increasingly large focus within the field of digital sociology. This could be for many reasons. To begin, the introduction of technology and technological aides has started to begin at a much earlier age in the year 2015 than it has ever before. Looking back twenty years ago, classrooms (especially elementary school classrooms) were lucky if they had two or more desktop computers within the confines of their classroom. In today’s society and the world of education, it is uncommon to see less than four desktop computers per classroom at the complete bare minimum. This paper will attempt to take a look into the ways in which technology is being incorporated within the elementary, and in some circumstances, pre-school classroom. Throughout the research process and acquiring different studies and cases in order to prepare this paper, it became clear that technology was not always this relevant within the classroom. That raises the question as to why, in 2015, is technology so important and so necessary in order to have a successful and meaningful life? This could be taken in many different routes, as it is clear that technology affects people in all stages and in many areas of their lives, but in this case it will be focused on why it is so necessary and seemingly beneficial in the world of teaching and education. As with many different things, there is a vast array of opinions surrounding the thought of technology, and the reasons why it has made its way into the classroom. From there, Ruppert et. al states that these technological devices can in return become agents to shape our social worlds, which has become evident in many cases, including the introduction of technological devices into the classroom. This is directly related to the digitalization of the elementary classroom because it is clear that children are being introduced to technology, and technological devices much earlier than their predecessors. Children as young as one year old are being taught how to use things such as tablets and the basic functions on a smartphone, which makes the integration of technology into the classroom in order to aide and guide their learning a no-brainer. These technological devices shape their world, outside and now inside the classroom, which in return, they will end up shaping the devices, which we have already seen to be true with the introduction of learning software and educational functions. Overall, it is clear that there is a great need for technology within the elementary school classroom, and how this recent digitalization has become something that will greatly benefit many
