Digitally Insane The average person spends 4 years of their lives looking down at their cell phones. (Ea) The use of technology in our world is clearly a growing problem for all ages, and needs to be addressed, especially since the production of technology is flourishing today. I believe that the human race needs a reality check in how much time they are spending on their electronic devices. Technology and electronic devices are affecting a multitude of things, including our health, social lives, schooling and work, and relationships. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the constant use of technology, causing the detachment from the real world. It is very valuable to talk and see people in person, whether it is a friend, boyfriend, or boss. We do not go out for coffee anymore, we just text our friends for a half an hour, and tell ourselves that is enough to make a solid friendship. We ignore so many chances when we’re on our phones. If we have a question about a class, we simply email our teachers instead of going and asking them. We feel the need to “catch up” with our “friends” on Facebook, even though we hardly see them. “This technological detachment is becoming today’s reality” (Nilles). Social media does not mean that you are connected to the world. “Internet and mobile devices seem to be subtly destroying the meaningfulness of interactions.” (Nilles). This has lead to a sense of isolation in our society. Some think that is it simpler to just text or call someone, rather than being in person. We see our friends less and less nowadays. When it comes to friends, it should be quality over quantity. Most people have thousands of Facebook friends, but most of them are people they do not even see, or would not want to see. Nowadays, we have very few friends that we trust and spend time with. ‘Liking’ someone’s photos does not mean you are connected with them. Either delete the people you have no intention of seeing, or get connected with them again. People are very limited to good connections these days. I can confidently say that technology is affecting human interactions in many ways. We are having a harder time keeping up friendships and relationships. We are also struggling when it comes to technology in schools. One time when I was out eating with some friends, and I was on my phone, as the rest of them were. Yet, for one split second, I had this idea to simply look up. What I saw was an absolute nightmare. The rest of my group were staring blankly at screens, as if they were zombies. All I could think of is what difference it would make if we didn’t have these devices to restrict us. After doing my research, I came to the final decision that things need to change. My colleagues and I have all been affected by this, and continue to every day. I have both a cell phone and a chromebook, and I am on both of them every day for the majority of the day. In reality, there is nothing I can do for others, except for raise awareness. This is something that a person needs to change themselves, and you can not expect change to come without action. I think that schools could lessen how much we use our technology. I also think that we could reach out to parents to show them how much of an impact this actually makes on people for the rest of their lives. People just need to be conscious of how much time that they are spending on their electronic
