Technacy is listed in the full Macquarie dictionary, which shows the evolution that society is undergoing (Seemann, 2000). Seemann (2000) study of problems faced by Indigenous Australians showed that even developed literacy and numeracy programs will not provide the skills for students to be innovative in sustainable and creative ways. It is important that students are given the tools to be innovative sustainably as it is a current cross-curricula priority because it addresses the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life (ACARA, 2016). Jones and Buntting (2015) support the need for students to be prepared for a rapidly changing and technological society. These critical technacy skills are needed, even in remote Australian Aboriginal communities, as technologies become an integral part of daily life. As access to many services such as health, housing, employment and community development rely on technology, digital technologies is becoming an integral part of participating in society (Northern Territory Government, 2003) not unlike how literacy and numeracy is currently viewed as essential. For technacy to become a success a teaching and learning pedagogy that students participate in authentically, like the current digital technologies curriculum, is needed (Seemann, …show more content…
Thorvaldsen, Egeberg, Pettersen and Vavik (2011) small study indicated that digital literacy (technacy) is separate from numeracy and literacy not a intergrated element suggested by other studies (Seemann, 2000; Jones & Buntting, 2015; McKnight et al., 2016). Pruet, Ang, and Farzin (2016) studied tablet computer usage among primary school students to determine how it affected their results. Findings indicated that low and average performing students benefited from the tablet usage however, excellent learners were negatively effected by the collaborative learning style that the tablets encouraged (Pruet et al., 2016). The authors of the study indicated that more research was needed around the benefits of technology with differing ability as the results may have been due to the particular learning experience the study provided. Shively (2014) found that the individual program that was offered to students who were high achieving expanded their learning
