I think you should go back and talk to all thoses English teachers that did not think to teach the difference between a Essay and a Story:) . we just covered this in my English class . So I wrote what the elements of each a story and an essay were. I explained by putting the element and its definition and using an example of a story (“Save the Moon for Kredy Dicitson”) and using an example of a Essay (The Value of a Mess). Review of Howard’s “Students as Storytellers: Teaching Rhetorical Strategies through Folktales” In the NCTE journal, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, PhD student Jeffrey Howard published a fascinating article titled “Students as Storytellers: Teaching Rhetorical Strategies through Folktales.” In the article, Howard explains how he was able to captivate students with an assignment that gave them the creative license to reinvent a popular fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood, all while asking students to explore and develop rhetorical strategies in their composition. The article shows the value of using literature in the composition classroom as well as how the practically universal texts of fairytales can reach students of almost…

For students, the technology content offers audio summaries, links to videos, animation and graphic organizers. On-line students have access to a media toolkit and a student presentation builder. This allows students to create responses to the text, once again allowing students to make a connection to what they learned. Gormley and McDermott (2015) found that students expend a great deal of thought on their choices of visual, video, and audio displays providing evidence of what they learned from their reading.…

My goal is visual storytelling for print and digital that is content-driven, clear and easy to navigate. I accomplish this by collaborating and communicating with photo and word editors. This also requires staying up-to-date with daily news and being familiar with our newspaper's content. I often juggle multiple tasks during a design shift. In addition to my design responsibilities, I help make sure design desk schedules are accurate and posted in a timely manner, fix plotter paper jams, resolve digital issues, manage page flow, convert graphics to our style or correct them, provide detailed explanations of workflow issues, create illustrations and provide help to my colleagues when needed.…

Due to the latest technologies, teachers need to change the way they assess students in order to uphold academic integrity. I want to introduce teachers to using technology for practical purposes while helping students capitalize on their creativity and individual uniqueness. Using technology for some practical purpose, and not for the sake of using technology, must be the clear objective. New technology learners are exposed at an early age. It’s important for teachers not to focus on integrating technology too much instead of focusing on learning in the classroom environment.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

It has been found that students who often struggle with traditional literacy were successful in analytical thought and symbolic representation of ideas when it comes to the practice of higher-level literacy involving a webpage design.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

I completed my ten-hour class observation at the private school Georgia Military Prep. The Georgia Military Prep School is located on Georgia Military College’s main campus in Milledgeville. At GMC prep I observed Ms. Jennifer Spencer's advanced eighth grade math class. Ms. Spencer has a decidedly pleasant air about her, a quick smile, and a brisk step that belies her ‘let us get the job done’ type attitude. On my first day observing her class, I soon gathered that Ms. Spencer always has a goal in mind when she sets foot in the classroom.…

“Some dismiss [communication studies] as “fluffy,” or easy” (Frierson, 2012). However, people seem to not understand that a communication studies program can prepare you for a variety of careers. Frierson (2012) states, “In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists more career opportunities for communications graduates than any other major, including computer science, engineering and mathematics.” “Communication Studies is a broad discipline that covers rhetorical theory from the ancient Greeks to the latest in digital media.…
