Digital media has 3 distinct modes of self-representation; written, visual and quantitative (p1). Each of the modes of self-representation creates different meanings in their own individual way. Each self-representation platform exists for the same reason, but consists of different affordances for people, as they have different preferences of self-representation. These self-representation platforms differ from fitness tracking applications to lifestyle blogging to hook-up applications, but their end goal all relates to self-representation. The application that will be researched in this essay is Snapchat, as it is one of the most popular applications, which can be easily accessible as well

After capturing a photograph/video, Snapchat provides 4 different shades of filters that can be applied, an option for speed limit for people who are driving, the current temperature of when the image was captured, the current time/date, the current amount battery that the device using to take the picture/video on has, location filters (this varies, depending on the location of the snap), adding stickers, adding Bitmojis, adding emojis, adding text or doodle on the image/video and numerous lenses for a person 's face (continuously updating and changing). When taking a video from Snapchat, there are also options of playing it backwards, fast forwarding and playing it in slow motion before sending it to other users. When using the Snapchat lenses, the user 's face must be detected, in order to select the different lenses provided and apply it to the selfie being captured/filmed. The same applies to sending a normal Snapchat to selected contacts, but instead of 24 hours, the time limit is chosen by the sender. The sender will have a choice of selecting who they want to send out a Snapchat to from their contact list, as well as how long they want their Snapchat to be seen by the receivers with a choice from 1 – 10 seconds. Users can replay one Snapchat per day from their private conversations, but can watch stories as many times as they please. Users who broadcast a story can see who’s viewed their stories. There is an option to "chat" with contacts, and in this option, users can communicate with each other by through text, sending stickers, call/video call each other and send each other existing images/videos from their camera roll. Snapchat also allows users to select existing visuals and post them as their stories. When saving a Snapchat from a story or taking a photo/video using the application, the content gets saved to a user 's memories. Memories is a storage space for a user 's personal collection of their snaps, as its a gallery from everything that was taken using this application, as well as shows the device 's camera roll on a separate tab for access. On the homepage of the application, there are options of news articles and latest gossips provided for users to browse. These sources vary as well as the content provided, as there are
