Difficult Roads In The Odyssey

Great Essays
The quote, “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations,” represents all people in life. We all have our ups and downs but by working hard, we can reach the places we’ve dreamed of. Odysseus, the protagonist in the novel The Odyssey by Homer, could relate to that. The novel starts out with being narrated by Homer. As the novel progresses, different characters narrate different parts of the story. Towards the beginning of the novel, Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, sets out on a journey to find news about his father. He leaves his mother, Penelope, in a house full of suitors. While Telemachus goes on his journey, Odysseus is found being stuck on Calypso’s island. The gods help Odysseus get home. He stops on the Phaeacian island for help getting …show more content…
Athena goes out of her way to save Odysseus by helping him get home. In the 5th book, Athena helps Odysseus get to the Phaeacians’ island. She takes action by, “But Zeus’s daughter Athena countered him at once. / The rest of the winds she stopped right in their tracks, / commanding them to all hush now, go to sleep… / … and escape his death at last” (5. 421-423 and 428). Athena is helping Odysseus on his journey home. Without Athena, Odysseus wouldn’t even make it home. Odysseus would probably die off somewhere before he would be able to make it back to Ithaca. Athena helps Odysseus by fighting off Poseidon who wants to make Odysseus suffer. She was the one who stopped the winds so that Odysseus could make it to the Phaeacians’ island safely. She is saving him from death and helping him get home. Additionally, Athena saves Odysseus by inspiring him to keep going on his journey home. In the 5th book, Athena inspires Odysseus to keep swimming so he can get to the Phaeacians’ island. Odysseus said, “... where he’d have been flayed alive, his bones crushed / if the bright-eyed goddess Pallas had not inspired him now “ (5. 470-471). Odysseus would have been killed by the big waves pushing him towards the sharp rocks if Athena hadn’t inspired him. Athena was saving Odysseus from his …show more content…
Athena comes up with the big plan on how Odysseus should kill the suitors. In book 13, Athena tells Odysseus how he will go about and kill the suitors. She says, “‘First I will transform you- no one must know you… / … I’ll dim the fire in your eyes, so shining once- / until you seem appalling to all those suitors… / … But you, you make your way to the swineherd first… / … Wait there, sit with him, ask him all he knows... ‘“ (13. 454, 458-459, 461, 468). Athena is telling what Odysseus should do in her plan. She is making sure that the plan plays out in perfection. Odysseus is just listening to Athena tell him what to do. If Athena wasn’t there to help Odysseus, he might’ve not thought about a plan to kill the suitors. He might have just stormed into his house without a plan. Athena is more responsible for Odysseus’ happy homecoming. Moreover, Athena plans Odysseus’ journey home. In the 1st book, Athena is telling the gods about her plan to make sure that Odysseus gets home safely. She said, “‘... let us dispatch the guide and giant killer Hermes / down to Ogygia Island, down to announce at once / to the nymph with lovely braids our fixed decree: / Odysseus journeys home...’” (1. 100-103). She is planning everything in advance. She also has the gods to

Although we don’t encounter Odysseus’s during the first few books, Odysseus changes throughout his journey returning back home. When Odysseus was first introduced, he was very arrogant and even refused to get help from God. After facing the obstacles while coming home, he realized the significance of God, and took Athena’s help to plan his return back home. Rather than rushing home and showing off who he was, he took his steps with patience to not let anything go wrong. His action led him to be gracefully be admired for his intelligence and skills.…

For the Greeks, it was worse for a mortal to lose the favor of the gods than it was to die. Because of how sorrowful they made Odysseus' journey home, the gods began to pity Odysseus, and each in turn forgave him (except Poseidon). With the favor of the gods on his side, nothing could stop Odysseus from returning home; he could finally return to the life he had left and flourish in his own home instead of wandering aimlessly, cursed and forsaken. Athena specifically guided him and began his official journey home by advocating for him in front of all the gods (again, except for Poseidon): "surely he goes down to a death earned in full!/... my heart breaks for Odysseus..."…

“Luck is not chance- It’s Toil- Fortune’s expensive smile Is Earned” – Emily Dickinson I have chosen a relatively philosophical problem to discuss. We find a lot of people giving up on their pursuits and goals. As subtle as this may seem, if one thinks about it, just one person giving up on a single pursuit because the going got tough, can have an exponential amount of consequences.…

    1. PLOT When bringing up the matter about Odysseus, Athena tells Zeus about his problem and how she wants to help him since he’s stranded on Calypso’s island. The reader may notice that Athena uses an emotional appeal when telling about Odysseus and how her “‘heart breaks for Odysseus’”(1.57). Athena emphasizes how much Odysseus wants to go home and states that he “‘longs to die’”(1.71). This creates sympathy towards the audience and Zeus which proceeds to planning Odysseus’ journey home.…

When there is protagonist in a story, there exist antagonists. They are used as either an obstacle to the main character’s journey, or as another form of motivation to get through. Posidon, without a doubt, is the antagonist in The Odyssey. There may be many insignificant characters that are obstacles to Odysseus’s episodes of adventure; however, Poseidon’s existence becomes the main objection to Odysseus returning to Ithaca.…

One of the major ways Athena helps Odysseus is when she warns him of his Supreme Ordeal; the final test that proves whether or not Odysseus has proved himself a hero and king. When Odysseus arrives in Ithaca the first person to greet him is Athena, with bad news that suitors have taken over his kingdom and have been using his wife, and queen of Ithaca (Penelope) to become king, by trying to persuade her into marriage. Homer writes in Part Two of “The Odyssey”, “ he arrives in Ithaca after an absence of twenty years. The goddess Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home. Athena [...]directs him…”…

In The Odyssey, Athena’s purpose is to help Odysseus restore order to Ithaca. This would improve their civilization as a whole, and return Odysseus back to his family and rightful place at home. For Telemachus, their relationship is somewhat different. Athena is the spark that causes Telemachus to strive to find his father and himself in the process. Athena helps Odysseus and his family come together and to restore order to their palace, whereas God in Exodus uses Moses to help the Israelites.…

The Epic Poem, “The Odyssey”, written by Homer, shows when the journey is more important than the destination in several different places. One example that shows this in the text is in the section, “Sailing From Troy”. In this section, Homer relates through his words of how Odysseus and his men are blown by the winds to Ismarus, on the coast of Cicones. He writes that Odysseus and his men “stormed that place and killed the men who fought(Homer 44). They proceed to plunder the place and divide the loot between themselves.…

Thankfully, the goddess Athena helps Odysseus reclaim his home by coming up with a plan to kill the suitors, which mostly involves Odysseus becoming enraged enough to defeat the foul suitors. The motives behind Odysseus's will to kill the suitors is understandable. To start off, the suitors help themselves to possessions from Odysseus's home whenever the need seemed to arise. Plus, they tried their hardest to woo the beautiful Penelope, Odysseus's wife.…
