Difficult Conversation Essay

Improved Essays
My difficult conversation occurred over my summer going into senior year of high school. I had been working at my town’s local pizza restaurant for nearly two years at that point. Since starting there, I had yet to receive a raise and I felt that I had earned a raise from my work over the previous two years. I started by talking to my friend and colleague, Jon. Jon started working at the restaurant a few months after I did and when I talked him, he informed me he received a raise a few months ago. This made me upset and is probably what led to a conversation with my manager, which I could’ve handled better, from a professional and ethics perspective.
As one can read, my difficult conversation did not go in the direction I would’ve

Without knowing it at the time, I was a message deliverer. Being a message deliverer is when you want to prove a point and get the other person to do what you want (Leigh, 2016, slide 14). This is something, which I should try and avoid moving forward because it usually ends up backfiring and not working out the way it’s intended too. I walked into the conversation trying to prove a point instead of just having a conversation. This is clear as I opened the conversation with an advocacy. I “explicitly asserted my opinion” (Leigh, 2017, slide 5) in the first line of dialogue. As we have learned in class this can result in an advocacy ping back and fourth. What this means is, instead of both sides having healthy dialogue back and fourth, each side will just advocate their opinion. This rarely results in a productive conversation (Leigh, 2017, …show more content…
In the middle of the conversation I again tried to illustrate a story on why I deserved a raise when I talked about learning the cash register. The conversation was in an advocacy ping back and fourth though, and because of this the illustration carried no weight. Reflecting back on the conversation, I also did not word my illustration in a professional manor. Towards the end of my conversation I said “Jon got a raise after only a year in a half”, this is another advocacy and is also an example of distributive justice. Distributive justice is “the extent to which society’s institutions ensure that benefits and burdens are distributed in ways that are fair and just (Leigh, 2017, slide 9). If this were today, I would completely remove saying that from the conversation. Every person is different and saying something like that was not ethical and also put my boss in an even more defensive

Additionally, justice also refers to how commodities should be distributed throughout a community (Coale, 2015). There are numerous examples of inequality spread throughout The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta had to travel 20 miles to receive medical care from Johns Hopkins, because it was the only hospital to treat African American patients. If Henrietta would have arrived for medical care at a “white- only hospital, the staff was likely to send [her] away, even if it meant [she] might die in the parking lot” (Skloot, 2010).…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

During my time at Goodyear, I had received many anonymous note, some serious, some not, but I had never received a note like this before. Somebody had listed my name, and the names of the other three tire managers, with the salary next to each name. I had always worried about being paid less than the men for the same work, but I never had any proof. I was kind of like a wife, nursing a nagging suspicion that her husband was having an affair, with no evidence. But then in 1998 nearly two decades after I began working there, there it was in plain black ink what I had always feared.…

Coaction is any connection between organisms within a community. Re-assessment of Conflict Summary In my original conflict summary, I talked about a conflict I had with a complete stranger over aggressive driving. On an early summer morning, I was driving home from work very tired and experienced a close call by a car cutting me off. The man thought I cut him off, but that wasn’t how I saw it. The man ended up following me almost all the way home, when I decided to pull to the side of the road at the beginning of my street and see what he wanted.…

Bigotry is seen by most of the world as an unholy, damaging, extremist act that is never to be done and it should not done or be given even the smallest bit of attention. To me, however, bigotry is just another perspective. The “Twitter, Hate Speech, and the Costs of Keeping Quiet” essay got me thinking about the importance of perspectives. If I see or believe something from my perspective, even if it’s considered to be offensive or demeaning towards a person or group, I put it out there. If I don’t, how will I know that those thoughts are valid or credible?…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Everyone has time to be healthy Freshman 15 is an expression used to describe an arbitrary amount of weight students put on in their first year of post secondary studies, usually due to unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits. Students say they struggle finding a balance between work, leisure, and maintaining healthy habits, leading to a lack of exercise, and poor nutrition. These complaints are clearly caused by a lack of intrinsic motivation and a growing status quo of complacency, rather than actual time constraints. Despite the vast number of home workouts that one can complete in under ten minutes, students will still excuse themselves from any form of physical activity, in favour of inactive alternatives. The problem is further pushed…
