Lester & Parnell give a good example of what a differentiation strategy means."Businesses that employ the differentiation strategy emphasize uniqueness, producing and marketing products or services that can be readily distinguished from those of their competitors" (Lester & Parnell, 2006, p.12). Scism utilizes this strategy for the Walton Art Center in many ways. First, she found ways to utilize the staff that she already had without creating new expenses for the art center. Next, Scism made sure that she moved her management staff around to areas where she saw fit for their potential to help develop that particular department. In addition to that, after the art center revenue increased, she did focus on giving herself a huge raise or hiring
