The students who were a part of the study have been receiving Positive Behavioral Support (PBS). PBS is designed to prevent and respond to problem behaviors by teaching desired behavioral expectations, practicing them, and receiving reinforcement for demonstrating those behaviors (Sandmel et al., p. 23, 2009). In conjunction with PBS, the Self-Regulated Strategies Development (SRSD) for writing was examined. The SRSD is an evidence-based …show more content…
24, 2009). Research shows that “SRSD improves students’ attitudes about writing as it increases the quality of written compositions, knowledge about writing, amount of time spent planning, and length of written compositions for students with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), struggling writers without an identified disability, and regularly achieving writers” (Sandmel et al., p. 24, 2009). There are 6 stages of instruction for SRSD which includes “Develop Background Knowledge, Discuss It, Model It, Memorize It, Support It, and Independent Performance.” The results of the study showed that the SRSD approach for writing helped students improve their quality, length, and use of genre-specific elements in their essays and stories (Sandmel, et al., p. 32, …show more content…

Each intervention included a passage with 8 multiple choice questions and either a story map or SWBST graphic organizer to be filled out while reading. Three of the six interventions will be with a story map and the other three will be with a SWBST graphic organizer. After reading, the students must utilize the graphic organizer to answer the 8 questions. The students do the reading silently, fill out the graphic organizer alone, and answer the question with no prompting so the results are solely based on the students’ performance. The main purpose of this is to determine if graphic organizers help to improve reading comprehension.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Contrary to Tompkins (2012) theory that explains children can be writers at the same time they are learning to read if not sooner; when children are able to develop the interrelation of purpose, audience they can write about those experiences while learning standard spelling usage, capitalization, and punctuation. The writing process has five features with subsections lead the writer through the complete process of producing a paper ready for publishing. When I compare my writing preparation I find that most times it falls into prewriting = 1st draft, revising = 2nd draft, final round of revising for grammar/punctuation errors, and the paper is ready for submission. Tompkins (2012) outlines the constructive process of writing with the key features; prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.…

This transferred to my writing and it was very noticeable. However, during my time in the Writing 39 series, it has influenced me to use the strategies I learned in writing and apply it to other classes. One thing I’ve discovered from being in Writing 39B is how to interpret the author’s purpose.…

As I reflect upon the three essays assigned in RWS 200, I realize the countless strategies that I learned to help improve my writing. My improvement can be seen chronologically among the papers. The strategies that were most effective in my writing were, ATCC, rebuttal, and evaluations. Essay #1 and essay #3 emphasized the importance of the credibility of our sources. My topics, arming teachers and vegetarianism, were controversial so there were many articles about them that supported my arguments.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

“Diving In: An Introduction to Basic Writing” by Mina Shaughnessy In this article, Shaughnessy argues that educators need to start examining their own teaching and learning processes and the complex and contextual needs of their students, instead of focusing on what students can be doing differently. She points out that basic writing students are not behind and need to “catch up” to any particular level, but there must been a more effective means of communication needs to be established between the students and teachers (291). Shaughnessy presents four stages of development as a basic writer instructor and explains how educators move through these stages before becoming competent to teach basic writing. The first stage called “Guarding the…

Positive feedback and encouragement, however, are extremely important, as students need to feel good about themselves. Students are encouraged to write in their journals on a daily basis. It is also important to note that teachers do not need to mark and correct everything the students write.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
