Power is manifested in many different ways some people have lots of power while others have little or no power whatsoever. First this paper is going to talk about the kind of power that Slim had and how he got it. Next it’s going to talk about the power hta Curley had and how that kind of power is harmful to a person. Finally this paper is going to talk about the lack of power that Crooks had and how he got such a small amount.
Slim's power came from the respect of all of the men. That came from the fact that he was the best skinner on the ranch the “ prince of the ranch” (33). With his power he leads the men, whatever he says is the law and the men will obey such as when he said that Candy’s dog needed to be shot even though Candy did not want to he still obeyed and let Carlson shoot and kill his dog (page number 45). Slim’s power and the decisions he makes with that power help him gain more respect from every single man at the ranch. Respect can be a very powerful form of power because people will listen and want to obey you from it that was the power that Slim had. There are other kinds or absences of power to learn.

At the ranch he was the stable buck the lowest of all of the jobs, The job job of the stable buck is that he would fix all of the leather straps that was used on the horses and take care of the barn. He didn’t always have no power before the Great Depression when he was younger his father owned a farm “ my old man owned a chicken ranch with ‘bout ten acres”(70) on that farm he & his father had power. Until the Great Depression came and they had to sell it and become a migrant workers that's when he found the ranch he's on now hasn’t moved since. Since he is black he had to live in a little room in the barn he didn’t have any friends and that lowered his self esteem and in turn lowered his power even
