Gradually, unidirectional microphones, which could be aimed specifically at the desired sound source, were developed. While early booms to hang and move the microphone above the set had been large and clumsy, lighter booms soon made recording more flexible. By late 1932, innovations in multiple-track recording per- mitted music, voices, and sound effects to be registered separately and later mixed onto one track. Narrative action and character psychology still remained central, and continuity rules. Sound, color, deep focus, and other techniques enhanced the style.

Genre in Hollywood
Almost every Hollywood studio was associated with a specific type of genre; MGM had musicals and dramas, Warner Bros. Had gangster films, Universal had its share of horror films. Although different genres, they fallowed the same classical narrative structure. Problems arose in the beginning of the film and they must be solved in order to restore the balance in the world. To identify a genre we must look at their components. For example a western genre has elements, symbols to identify that world: for ex, there are sheriffs, outlaws and the wilderness.
Different genre requires different types of stars. In Warners gangster films the stars were associated with working class people, the only predominant audience left after the Great Depression. As they watched these movies they were attracted by the attack on the government and Warner's profited from it. This may be considered an ideology. All the genres presented an idea, a ritual.

The process of refining and marketing the phonograph from the texts “The History of the Edison Cylinder Phonograph” and “The Incredible Talking Machine” by Randall Stross is similar to the development of the Audio Spotlight in Mark Fischetti’s “Psst…. After the Great Depression in 1929, Hollywood entered a sort of golden age for film. It was perceived that audiences went to the theatres in order to distract themselves from their current misery. Hollywood pictures then started to have a changed mood of cynicism in their films, which provided a sense of realism for the audience. Because of the new contempt for law and government after the Great Depression, studios such as Warner Bros. Entertainment started to fill up theaters across America with films that allowed their audiences to revel in the adventures of organized criminals. Warner Bros. used to be considered as one of the “Big Five” studios that prevailed in Hollywood.…

Hollywood’s Commercial Aesthetic: Commercial aesthetic can be thought of in the context of turning pleasure into a product we can buy-this includes films. Maltby and Craven (1995) argue that films are made up of many different elements, such as a script, story, director and so on. They say these elements are then intertwined together by producers and production companies to satisfy the current needs and wishes of consumers at a given point in time. Storytelling style is an important part of achieving the commercial aesthetic, and Hollywood responds to what audiences want by taking a more ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’ approach (Maltby 469). The major features of Hollywood narrative style are clarity, simplicity,…

The audience becomes actively engaged through a psychological connection with the use of archetypes (Chang et al., 2013). The movie Babadook is an example of an archetypal symbolism.…
