In 1962 the drug was first manufactured by American Scientist, Calvin Stevens. When the drug was first made it was named Cl- 581 which progressed into Ketamine. It was developed as a plagiaristic version of PCP (phencyclidine). Scientist wanted to make a drug that had similar anesthetic effects that PCP does without all the harmful side effects. Compared to PCP, Scientists wanted to make a drug that would not cause long lasting symptoms, including hallucinations during recovery, which was concerning because it could produce psychotic symptoms such as delusions and even psychosis. The use of Ketamine pharmacologically started in Belgium in 1963, only for veterinary use. As time progressed the use of the drug on humans began to be more frequent. Scientist soon found that ketamine produced the minor hallucinogenic side effects that they were looking for that would eventually be a substitute for PCP.
