My family was considered upper middle class and not only did we the money, but we also had the status. Growing up, we had maids and nannies that worked for us, therefore we had people that worked for us and those people were members of a lower social class. Additionally, my family had prestige and along with prestige came power. Since my family came from a family that was highly involved in the political party in our city and state, we were often treated with respect within our society. Our family was well aware that we had privilege. It is hard to challenge having privilege when you already have it. However, the situation changed when we emigrated to the United States. We have had to work and get an education to get a higher paying job, which would ultimately lead to a higher socioeconomic status. That has been our way of challenging our situation since we moved to the United States. When it comes to dismantling oppression related to privilege, as a future practitioner I have to treat everyone equally. Regardless of their social standing within our society, every member in our society should get the same treatment and respect as everyone else.
