Mark Strand Poem

In examining Mark Strand’s book, New Selected Poems, it becomes clear that Strand is very different from Bukowski. Mark Strand seems to have had more of a traditional education and it reflects in his poetic form. His poems have a structure, but are still modern and almost free verse yet at the same time are not. That being said his poems are very enjoyable.
The first poem that stood out was “Sleeping with One Eye Open” in this poem Strand is describing a personal experience as well as also describing how it feels to be human sometimes. This seems to be a recurring theme with Strand; he typical does not write about his everyday life but more about the human experience. Moreover, in this poem Strand talks about an experience in which he becomes

In this poem Strand is describing the elderly sitting on a porch letting the day wash over them. Almost as if they are waiting to die. A person could argue that “Old People on the Nursing Home Porch” is a figurative poem of what it is like to experience death. Especially when the poem uses phrases like “reaches out to take the world away” or “where each will lie alone” it appears that Strand is describing another great human state (Strand 8).
Another poem worth examining is “What to Think of”. In this poem it appears that Strand is stepping away from his usual themes. “What to Think of” is not a very symbolic poem, but it goes to great lengths to describe a person using symbolic metaphors; for example when the poem states “you are the prince of Paraguay” or “floating down from Minas Gerais” (Strand 33). This poem appears to be describing a person in a Mardi Gras parade. A person that Strand seems to be attracted to, it almost reads like a Bukowski poem. This is attention-grabbing because it shows that Strand is fairly flexible as a

He then describes his relationship with his wife as lying “in her arms” and lastly, his bond with his daughter is defined as her “real baby” (Strand 61). Lastly, Strand goes on to state he “will grow into death,” and that his life is “getting smaller” (61). What the meaning of these relationships is a dual statement. The first is part of meaning of the poem is that Strand shows what he is to the most important people in his life. To his mother he was something to be adored, to his wife he was a companion and to his daughter he is a nurturer. He provided a need to all these women and in some ways he is saying they are objectifying him. The purpose of the poem is to map out the stages of his life first as a child, then a husband, followed by a father, and lastly Strand writes about his

Creating memories is one of the most beautiful and happy moments for an individual especially if those moments are with their loved ones. Although memories can last forever, people do not live forever. Anything can happen today, tomorrow or the day after, but the real question is how can an individual endure the pain of a lost one? In "Passed On" by Erin Belieu, the author reveals that even if an individual loses a loved one, the precious memories that they have created will remain with them forever and happiness will overtake their sadness; thus, creates an important theme towards the poem using symbolism and figurative imagery.…

The poem begins in prose form, which outpours like conversation. As a result, the prose structure creates a very warm, homelike feeling. The prose paragraph describes the speaker’s home life and provides a backstory for the reader. It is evident that there is a sense of family belonging through the speaker’s description of their home: “our walls high and bare except for the / family photos whose frames [are] crowded with siblings” (8). Undoubtedly, the family is large and fellowship with one another is an important aspect of their home life.…

The poem is articulated from a second person point of view, as stated ‘hang over you in a dream’ and ‘why do you wake’. The use of second person demonstrates how the author feels disconnected to his past and his descendants. The writer struggles with his sense of identity, thus feels detached to his family. ‘Ancestors’ also expresses how a lack of understanding of ones roots will eventually catch up to affecting ones future. Several dashes are utilized as part of the structure, to reinforce the unknown and to allow a pause for thoughts to become more clearer.…

“Broadway Melody” by Frederick Seidel is somewhat humorous but realistic impression of elderly people. I can honestly say that I laughed after reading this as well as slightly being moved by the beauty of it towards the end. I find it a unique poem, because of the subject matter and context, as well as the cruelty and the offensiveness of the tone with the speaker. In addition, In my interpretation of the poem the main focal point revolves around the idea of ageism in which everyone in this world will face some day, and how some people may view ageism as a sorrowful way to spend the remainder of their lives, by only enjoying life as much as your physical body allows you. Frederick focuses on the ugliness of age and the decrepitly that comes…

"Poetry is about slowing down, you sit and you read something, you read it again, and it reveals a little bit more, and things come to light you never could have predicted." (New Criterion). This is a direct quote from Mark Strand himself and this idea about poetry couldn’t be anymore true. In “The Tunnel,” written by Strand, is about a man who is being stalked by a strange individual for days which slowly made him insane. Even though there is a physical story, there is a greater meaning hidden in this poem and this hidden message deals with judgment.…

Literature Paper Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone. Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. It is written in subtly and sounds simple, so the true meaning behind the poem is not really understood until the end, and has a deeper meaning.…

The poems need to be something you should stand for. This poem is about the racial injustice in Harlem that not many authors address in their literature. His poem is the epitome of the Black Arts Movement because his poem is telling the audience to wake up from their sleep and see what is going on around you. In his poem, he writes in a very aggressive and polemical way, so his point can get across to his readers. Baraka says, “Poems are bullshit unless they are teeth or trees or lemons piled on a step,” (703) this quote shows how he feels about poems.…

According to poet Rita Dove, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” This quote helps us understand why poems come in so many different styles, forms, and subjects. If one thinks of poetry as a whole, perhaps the first poem that surfaces the mind would be a poem in lyrical verse. This more general form of poetry is indeed how the vast majority of poems are written. However, the more classic form of poetry, or perhaps the more ancient form of poetry, is found in epic form, which is known as narrative verse.…
