No matter who you are, what you do, or what you wear, death always strikes. Death can tear people apart, and even bring people closer together. In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, it is written in Germany 1940, Death is the person that carries human souls after they die. He's the one who picks people's souls up after they pass, and he takes them to a place that is unknown. In this story Death is judged, by his name, on what he does. Everyone considers Death to be ruthless and cruel, judging on what he does, but some people have different perspectives on him. Death is kind towards humans demonstrated through the way he doesn't like his job, the way he cares for souls, and the way he cares for Liesel.

In The Book Thief, in the year 1940, germany was getting bombed and death saw Liesel. Death says “Please, again, i ask you to believe me. I wanted to say: I'm sorry child.” (13) Death is showing affection towards Liesel by caring about how she feels about death. Death doesn't want Liesel to think he is bad, like how everyone fears him. Death wants Liesel to not want him but not be scared of him because he wants her to live a full life. At the very end of the book, everyone is dead and Death is standing upon Liesel thinking “I wanted to tell The Book Thief many things, about beauty and brutality… I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly, and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.” (550) Death shows affection towards Leisel by wanting to tell her what is real about the world, and what his perspectives were on what he saw throughout his time.
