Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck which was published in 1937. The novel is set in the 1930s which was an era where women and men were not treated equally, where men could work and earn money whether a women had to stay at home and be a housewife, where a women was treated as a sex object whether in comparison the men could go to a brothel and sleep with a hundred different women. From Steinbeck point of view we get the impression that most of the women works are whores whether only 1% of the women are seen to not be used as a sex object and seen to be having a status of maternal nature about them.

We also get the sense that Susy is an amusing woman who often jokes around with he customers. Old Susy’s character is seen to be malicious about her job as she has filled the man’s head with what could be lies about Clara’s house which is the owner of another brothel. One of Susy’s tale is that “Clara gets three bucks a crack…….don’t crack no jokes”. This tells us that when compared to Old Susy, Clara doesn 't like to communicate with her customers and for her its just simply business and if people want to go they can if not than they can leave her alone and not bother her. The term “dont crack no jokes” indicates to the reader that the men go to the brothel to have fun and for them the brothel is a place where they can feel a sense of friendship and togetherness but at Clara’s house the man probably feel uncomfortable around her as she doesn 't talk to them or even acknowledge
