The state of mind can easily be altered, for example when people watch infomercials, they tend to think they need what is being advertised. The American satellite network, QVC, advertises various products that sell quickly due to the alteration of thinking. The persuasion comes easily as the producers intentionally repeat key words such as “free” or “discounted with the purchase of” in order to implement the need of the product. By allowing themselves to think they have to have the product, customers buy what is being shown. In the case of verbal abuse, the abuser is the advertiser and the victim is the viewer of the network. Although an infomercial channel is a bit different from an individual's feelings, the ideas correlate to each other. The abuser utilizes the victim’s vulnerability leading them to think that they are less than everyone else. Furthermore, many believe that verbal abuse is not harmful as it leaves no physical reminder of the damage done by the abuser, however, this is false. By purposely intimidating others it creates low self esteem and eventually leads the individual into having trust issues. The myth that abuse only occurs in poor, “ghetto” areas has been put to rest by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program which states that “Approximately one-third of the men counseled for battering at Emerge...are professional men who are well respected in their jobs and communities. These have included doctors, psychologists, lawyers, ministers, and business executives.” Although personal background has to do with the way people treat others, so does the work environment. If a man or woman is more likely to be idolized and social, they are expected to always be in the know, which causes stress and leads to anger taken out on their loved ones that must also maintain the same “classy image”. The people of a certain social class are scrutinized on a daily basis, therefore, their lives become harder as pressure builds up to create the perfect impression that they have a picture perfect life. The issue of anger and frustration is in no way, shape, or form a justification for domestic violence, but it can be tough to constantly be watched and criticized, therefore, the abuser is constantly seeking to belittle their victim in order to instill a sense of fear and always scare them into being just as perfect as themselves.
