In the attempt to design a commercial potty, it is crucial to address the customer’s needs as well as the company’s needs. According to the customers’ answers to our survey, it is quite evident that they are most concerned about price, weight, durability, degradability and ease of storing. However, the company needs to take several other factors into consideration, including ease of making, product safety, and manufacture cost. Here, the manufacture cost and the sale price are represented by a single criterion, cost, because the relation between these two is positive correlation, meaning high (or low) manufacture cost leads to high (or low) sale price. Most of the potty used in healthcare nowadays are made of ubiquitous polymers such as Polyethylene and Polypropylene, which are generally non-biodegradable under normal environmental conditions. Thus, degradability is significantly low. For an overnight-or-one-day use product like healthcare potty, such low degradability is fatal to the environment, since they will accumulate really fast. Weight of the potty should be in an appropriate range, because of its short use time, customers are to carry the potty, plus the weight of the waste, to the disposal site quite frequently. Durability refers not only to its capacity to hold the waste but also, in some unfortunate situations of being dropped and/or hit, to maintain its form. Potty that breaks under usual types of contact, such as those mentioned above, will result in unhygienic scenes, which are totally undesirable in healthcare environment, that require lots of cleaning. In order to do so, it is needed a quantitatively and quantitatively comparison between concepts. At first, a specification-criteria matrix in Table 6, which allows to compare different options in one specification, is made to evaluate the best option for each specification.
