Love does not have any clear definition, everyone has a different perspective about love.
The concept of love is totally different to Carver and Shakespeare, as they both lived in different eras. Shakespeare praises the love and says that the relationship is based on trust and understanding. He even says that there won't be any alteration till they die, whereas, Carver on other hand is a modern writer.

Carver thinks that people change, they marry and get divorced even after having children. The love gets altered when you find fault in your partner, and look for someone else and move on in life. In Carver's story, the character Mel says that ”There was a time when I thought I loved my first wife more than life itself. But now I hate her
