I visited three different classrooms at north shore elementary. For my internship, I am in a first-grade classroom, so I decided to observe a second-grade classroom as it would be a good opportunity to see how wide the gap of only one year would be with students. I also visited a gifted and talented third-grade classroom and a Special education resource class. From my day observing different classrooms I learned that techniques and strategies change to accommodate each individual child.
In the second-grade classroom, I observed how the teacher differentiated instruction for a student with autism. At one point during a spelling test, the student seems to become frustrated at the pace the teacher was going. In turn when the teacher finished calling

The teacher let me know that she would only be going over strategies to use during the STARR test. The first thing I noticed was that the passage the students were reading was intended for fourth grade. All the students knew what they were doing and got to work right after they were given their assignment. The students did not need prompting. Differentiated Instruction as she worked in small groups and when over the passages. I also noticed that since some students worked at a different pace that they had options for enrichment through a technology component. For example, at certain points droning the lesson the teacher allowed students to leave the classroom and go to the computer lab to work on a technology project at pertained to the concept being taught. One motivational strategy the teacher used was giving students extrinsic rewards, for example, the teacher gave students candy that they could eat during class while they worked. The teacher also had intrinsic rewards in place, the teacher created a student-centered classroom. When students are involved in their own learning where the goal is mastery, not performance. The students work at their own pace and the teacher uses classroom management to make sure that things as smoothly as possible. One classroom management strategy I noticed was that the teacher made sure the students knew the rules and she was consistent. At one point during independent work, the students were talking too much and the teacher asked one student what they were doing for thanksgiving the rest of the class got quite as they listen to the student’s response that they were having turkey for thanksgiving. After the student told the teacher their thanksgiving plane they teacher said, “well that sounds fun, I might just show up there again this year” as some students giggle the teacher explained that she knew where they all lived and that she would show up at

I recently observed two elementary school classrooms. At Elmdale Elementary, I observed Mrs. Earp’s first grade class and at George Elementary, I observed Mrs. Clay’s fifth grade class. There were many similarities found in classroom management, however, each teacher possessed different teaching methods. Between both observations, I was introduced to several effective teaching skills, as well as methods that were shown to be ineffective. At Elmdale Elementary, I observed Mrs. Earp’s first grade class.…

While at my observation this morning, the teacher would step in and help children when they were fighting for a toy, or when one of the children turned off the computer while he was playing, and he did not know how to turn it back on to keep doing this painting game. 2. How does the teacher actively listen to children? There was a little boy during what looked like it was “free choice time” that was playing a painting game in the computer.…

While doing this observation I tried to blend into the environment, to not make it obvious that I was observing and taking notes, I tried to cover all of this by using my phone most of the time like everyone was doing to take notes. I observe a total of 4 public settings on the Bloomfield College campus including the library, dining area, and the Star-Computer Lab. I spent a total of 20 minutes in each location. The main task of this observation was to observe the social life going on in each location. But what I noticed is that almost everyone was more focus on using their phone rather then being socializing or doing their work.…

I observed a two-year-old room that was an inclusive classroom for a little girl, named Rosie, with cerebral palsy. I instantly noticed her and her condition because of her big wheelchair. This wheelchair was a giant hot pink contraption with Bob Marley stickers. I have never seen a children’s wheelchair but it looks way different then an adult one. The teachers explained to me all of the levers sticking out were to help the chair grow with her so that she could have it for many years.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…
