Africa, a continent made up of 54 different beautiful countries, which has very different characteristics and wealth. Cameroon, located in the center of Africa, is where I am from. I was born and raised there. I grew up with a lot of family around, but I am the only child of my parents. I am proud to say that I was raised by my family. They play an important role in my life, and who I am today. Growing up, I was taught values to respect, and beliefs to go by. What really surprised me was the fact that everyone was unbothered and busy looking. The air felt cleaner. Everyone seem to have an important place to be at, with no time to waste. It took time before I got use to looking at people in the eyes. This is because in Cameroon, you are not supposed to maintain eye contact with people who are older than you. Here, in the contrary, when you can’t look at someone in the eyes, it means you are lying or not being honest. I still struggle with this here, because at home I have to manner my Cameroonian culture, and once out of the house, I have to maintain the American

The first thing I noticed as soon as I got off the plane was that the smell of the air was different. It did not smell as fresh as it was in Guam, which intrigued me. It was one where I would spend my days smelling as I walked to and from my new school. This time the school that I went to was not a private school but a public school. My first ever experience in a “truly” American school in the States.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

Recently I decided to change my Spanish minor to a major. My reasoning for this change is that I can spend more time in the Spanish culture and have a better understanding of the Spanish language. I plan to pursue a career in the medical field and having a comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language will allow me to reach more patients. Latinos represent 16% percent of the Spanish population and are the fastest growing ethnic minority group. For this reason, I have chosen to study Spanish over other languages such as Mandarin or French.…

This principle I incorporated in my childhood, and into my adult life, any decision I choose to make is because of my choice and not because of the persuasion of others. In addition, a fervent value I carry is always giving a one hundred and ten percent to any task I am trying to accomplish.…
