Under pure axial compression loading for cube specimen (C1), the failure cracks generated are approximately parallel to the direction of load as shown in figure (4.3) with some cracks formed at an angle to the applied load. As a result, lateral shearing stress is produced in the cube specimen. The effect of this shear decrease towards the center of cubes; so these sides of the cube have near vertical cracks at the cube center. Figure (4.3): Failure pattern of cubes specimens (C1).
4.2.3. Static Modulus of Elasticity:
Modulus of elasticity is a necessary parameter to determine the stresses in materials and structures. Even though concrete has nonlinear stress-strain behavior, …show more content…
The modulus of elasticity from Eq. (2.6) is 16788 MPa. That shows good agreement between static modulus of elasticity obtained experimentally and that obtained from the ACI equation. The difference between the experimental value and analytics value is about 3%.
As mentioned earlier in chapter 2, most of the available data in the literature on the modulus of elasticity considers that the ratio between the Young's modulus of LWC and NWC is about 0.5 to 0.75. By using Eq. (2.5), the modulus of elasticity for normal weight concrete having same concrete strength is 22405 MPa. The ratio between the experimental modulus of elasticity of LWC and modulus of elasticity of NWC from (ACI- 318R-05, 2005) equation is 0.77. The suggested equation for Young's modulus of lightweight foam balls concrete in term of its cube compressive strength is as Eq. (4.2): Elwc = 3409 √fcu …show more content…
The first setup was for CY4, CY9 and C4 with single steel loading plate. The second setup was for CY7, CY8 and C6 with double steel loading plate, as shown in figure (4.5) and (4.6). The results of E-modulus test (cylinder (CY5)) would give an indication of the validity of stress-strain results. It has been noticed from experimental data from figure (4.7) that the maximum stress increases from 16.0 MPa to 20.0 MPa in cube specimens and from 14.0 MPa to 18.0 MPa in cylinders specimens with overall 20% increase. The Young's modulus form first setup is 12500 MPa. After using double plate, the Young's modulus form second setup is around 16666 MPa. The results show that the system works quite well, as shown in figure
