“We don't develop courage by being happy every day. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity”(De Angelis). In the victorian era, there were many difficult times that had to be challenging to get through, that is just life, right? Life is not always about surviving, it is in fact about living. No matter what, there is always going to be hard times that we need to face. There is many differences in today’s world compared to the victorian era. American actress and singer, Martha Plimpton, once stated, “Women have always been at the forefront of progressive movements. Women can be depended on when you need bodies in the streets for women's rights and human right”(Plimpton). Women can be depended on with almost anything, and people really started to realize this and things have finally changed. In the victorian era, women were meant to be at home, take care of children, cook and clean, and have everything done for their husbands while they went to work. Most of the time, none of this was appreciated. Women were looked down upon because they did not have an education, but that certainly wasn't their fault. In the story Jane Eyre, she states,“The next day commenced as before, getting up and dressing by rushlight; but this morning we were obliged to dispense with the ceremony of washing.”(Jane Eyre). Jobs were always changing and marriages were not working out because of it. American stand up comedian, Dennis Miller, once stated, “Never ever discount the idea of marriage. Sure, someone might tell you that marriage is just a piece of paper. Well, so is money, and what's more life-affirming than cold, hard cash?”(Miller). During the victorian era, marriage was all about the job and bring home the money, since men were only allowed to work women depended on it.
