There are many differences between Mathilde Loisel from “The Necklace”, and Della from “The Gift of the Magi”. For example, they have very contrasting values. Mathilde values material possessions and social status above all else, while Della sold her greatest treasure, her hair, so she would have enough money to buy her husband a present. Another difference is their behavior towards loved ones. Mathilde is unappreciative and embarrassed by her husband, as shown in the way she speaks to him after he works hard to get her an invitation to a party: “She scornfully tossed the invitation on the table, muttering ‘What good is that to me?’” (192) Della, however, loves her husband so much that she puts his wants before her own: “‘I had my hair cut
