After reading and watching the story of Beowulf, you can tell there are some major differences in both. Some of the differences are major and you can tell right away that they’re not the same, but some of the differences are not so hard to notice and will take a little more digging in the context to find them. In addition, there are many similarities in the poem and the movie. Most of the book is like the poem but some major differences stand out.

In both, Beowulf becomes king of the land and is courageous in fighting the monsters that take a step on his land. Beowulf killed Grendel without any weapons or armor because he knew that Grendel did not have any weapons and he wanted a fair fight. Grendel’s arm is then ripped off and taken as a reward by Beowulf. Beowulf becomes king of the land. Now that Grendel is dead, his mother is furious and hunts for revenge on Beowulf. He goes to Grendel’s home and finds his mother there waiting. In the next battle, a dragon is stomping all through his kingdom. He fights the dragon terrorizing his kingdom with a sword and armor. He thinks since the dragon has fiery breath, that using his sword and armor will be an even battle. With the help of Wiglaf, they kill the dragon. However, Beowulf suffers brutal damage in the battle against the dragon and eventually dies, leaving his kingdom to Wiglaf.

Now that I’ve went over all the differences and similarities in the poem and movie Beowulf you can see that the movie doesn’t do the poem justice as in the fact of the way some characters are portrayed and how the movie story is told. For me the movie is somewhat unjustified in the fact that Grendel’s mother is in no way the same in either book or poem, and many other reasons too. In some parts, it does the poem justice and is the same but for the most part the movie is completely different and needs to have more like the

In the film for example, King Hrothgar commits suicide, there is no evidence in the text supporting this. The film implies that Beowulf takes interest in the queen, while in the text there is no evidence of any romantic interest among them. This line from the film shows Beowulf’s interest, “Me It's not me he wants, my queen” (Memorable Quotes for Beowulf (2007))? The film states that Beowulf not only had an affair with Grendel’s Mother but also had a child with her.
