Tumblr and Instagram are two widely known social media outputs. And because of the fact that they are both information and communication technologies, it brings up the fact of freedom of expression. Though the two apps are very similar yet also vastly different, and it’s all in how they help users communicate to their audiences. They’re both great social media platforms that help people express themselves in the easiest way but they also differ in a vast number of ways. Tumblr has more options on what type of media to post, whereas Instagram has two options: photos or videos. The Instagram website has limited functionality that's mostly limited to viewing your own photos and editing your Instagram profile.” (McDunnigan) It’s true that the simplicity of Instagram draws in most of its user base, and typically that’s also what keeps them in too.

Nearly half, or 46% of these users were between the ages of 16 and 24 (always a difficult-to-reach demographic).” (Smith) Young adults as a whole are very critical of where to spread their ideas to get the best audience and reactions. In this day and age, they care about getting a reaction from whatever they post, whether it’s good feedback or detrimental feedback. However, on Instagram, teens typically only care about positive feedback, reacting harshly when something negative is said.
