Differences Between The North And South After The Civil War

Even though we were called the United States, we were not on the same page before the Civil War. The North and South had a lot of fights about many different topics. Most of these topics were very controversial, and was ultimately a cause of the civil war. But, lets take a look at what was happening. The North and South had many social, economic, and political differences before the civil war. To begin, the North and South had major social differences. The Northerners lived on small farms as opposed to the Southerners large plantations. The North also had many more large cities than the South did. Northerners believed slavery was barbaric, and everyone was free, but they did not think of African Americans as equals. Both the North and South had some forms of segregation. However, the Southerners believed slavery was an important way of life and ultimately the amount of slaves you had determined your wealth. Along with a few of the social differences, there were also many economic dissimilarities. Secondly, the economy was very different between the North and South. The main economy of the South was crops. Things such as: tobacco, cotton, and other major crops, were produced on the large plantations in the south. The Northerners were Republicans/Whigs. Therefore, the Southerners were Democrats. One of the Major politicians of the North was Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to leave slavery were the Constitution had placed it, he did not want to totally abolish or let slavery extend to other parts of the country. The South hated Lincoln, and when he was elected many of the Southern states left the United States. The frontrunner of the South was Stephen Douglas.
