Differences Between The Ku Klux Klan And The Black Panthers

Two Sides of Hate The Ku Klux Klan and The Black Panthers are two of Americans most predominate organizations. They have long been a part of American history. Two completely different organizations who were founded upon hate for two separate reasons, they both believe they should have their own nations. Both have been part of many violent protests and acts. These two organizations have a lot in common and many differences such as why they were founded, the rights they are protecting, and their existence today. The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 by six veterans of The Civil War. The main purpose of this group was to terrify and harass the newly freed blacks with a basis of the Anglo-Saxon religion. The KKK was, at first, upset that slaves were freed and made a point to harass and scare newly freed slaves. “In the final analysis, a race or specie is not judged superior or inferior by its accomplishments, but by its will and ability to survive.” (David Lane, 1968) David Lane was a KKK Wizard during the civil rights movement. The Wizard of the KKK is essentially that chapter’s leader. The Black Panthers started a movement to protect African Americans from violent acts and then formed into a more racial party. “I will train myself never to hurt or allow others to harm my Black brothers and sisters for I recognize that we need every Black Man, Woman, and Child to be physically, mentally and psychologically strong. These principles I pledge to practice daily and to teach them to others in order to protect my people.” (Shirley Williams, 1968) The KKK did not want African Americans to be in political office and the Black Panthers wanted to have more African Americans in political office to help them establish more rights. The KKK was founded over 100 years ago as the Black Panthers were founded over 50 years ago. They both have had prominent places in America’s history and have even crossed each other’s paths a few times. The Black Panthers are not prominent today but there are new movements fighting for black rights such as, Black Lives Matter. This organization is a lot like the Black Panthers, is to show validity of Black life. They are working to rebuild the liberation movement. “When we say Black Lives Matter, we are broadening the conversation around state violence to include all of the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. We are talking about the ways in which Black lives are deprived of our basic human rights and dignity.” (blacklivesmatter.com) The Ku Klux Klan has made it very clear they are not going anywhere. They are still very active today. Extremist groups have been a major issue in America for years and it looks like they will continue no matter what.
