Human Cloning Controversy

There is a lot of controversy regarding the Catholic Church and Human Cloning. With more research and scientific advances, it may be possible in the near future to clone human beings. Obviously, the ethical problems that arise must be put into consideration. According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, “cloning describes several processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity.” Scientifically, human cloning is similar and the only difference is that the biological entity is human beings. According to Dr. Richard Seed, human cloning may be able to one day reverse the aging process. Proponents of human cloning may also argue that therapeutic cloning may be able to cure many diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson 's, diabetes, and infertility. No definitive proof has shown this but with advances in technology, it may be quite possible in the future. Currently, adult stem cells or also known as somatic cells can be used to cure diseases and are completely moral, but taking the life of an embryo is not moral. The most important to consider with regards to the morality of certain treatments using therapeutic cloning is that the ends do not justify the means. Even if the sacrifice of one human life is enough to save millions, the killing of one person does not justify saving all those people. When dealing with issues such as human life, the moral object should be considered. God created man in his image and likeness and he also created them male and female. It would become possible for anyone with a somatic cell and an egg to create a clone. Babies are meant to be made through the conjugal love of their parents, not in an artificial way. Women are exploited in the process of human cloning. Instead of a child being conceived through the conjugal love of a couple, the woman is used for her eggs and her uterus to hold the baby made from the cells of someone else. With advances in modern science women who are reduced to their purely biological functions may be altogether replaced by artificial wombs. This is totally immoral because it reduces the female body to just a place to create a baby. I remember from the Life is Very Good concert in Arlington, Virginia on the March for Life this year that the speaker said that women are tabernacles. When we reduce people to machines capable of making human clones we take away the sanctity of the womb.
