Over the past century, many famous novels turn into a major success on the big screen. It wasn’t any different for Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. In 1964, the famous play by the Irish playwright hits the big screen, and viewers get to witness the extraordinary story of Eliza Doolittle as she transforms herself into an upper class women. Even though both novel and film have similarities, they also share some major differences.
One of the major differences was that My Fair Lady was a musical, while the novel by George Bernard Shaw was a written play. In the movie, several songs were sang by the characters. In both stories, the characters are basically identical. When reading the play and watching the movie, we could see that in both of the cases, Mr. Higgins is very sexist towards Eliza and women in general. He see’s Doolittle has an object rather than a human being. Higgins is also very self centered and only cares about his success and accomplishments he will gain by transforming Eliza. As for Eliza Doolittle, in both cases she is getting drawn into the idea that if her pronunciation gets better, she will live a better life. During the period of transformation, she realizes that she is an object to Higgins and decides to rebel against him. As times goes by, she tries to accentuate the fact that Higgins sees her as an object, but clearly he feels neutral about this issue and life goes on. In both stories we can see that there is a strong dominant factor in the male character. The women is tied to the leash while the man is holding it.
In conclusion, My Fair Lady and Pygmalion were both extraordinary stories. The storyline was very interesting and grabbed the attention of the viewers. We got the sense of what it was like living in the early 1900’s. While watching and reading the story, we could see that the male were much more dominant than the females at that time.
